GOOD MORNING!

I have discovered that an effective way to maximize my time is to pair audiobooks and podcasts with everyday activities such as driving and exercising. Perhaps you’ve also experienced the benefits of this multitasking approach. Recently, I came across a thought-provoking quote during a podcast, “we do not think and plan ahead to create opportunities; instead, we think and plan ahead to create margin for opportunities that we cannot yet predict.” This insight comes from Craig Groeschel, a self-described “pastor, author, leader and family man.”

Upon further reflection, if we look at the way in which we and our organizations work, we should be evaluating whether we are filling up our time and daily agendas with opportunities that exist today or if we are striving to concurrently respond to immediate needs while also creating margin for the opportunities of tomorrow. It’s easy to be caught in the busyness and obligation of attending every meeting and stacking our calendars to address every “fire.” Those patterns can effectively deliver short-term results, but often struggle to manifest into long-term success, as little margin is created to embrace the most impactful opportunities when they inevitably arise.

As I think about creating margin for opportunities in the context of our niche in healthcare real estate, there is no shortage of day-to-day challenges and opportunities. Having the capacity, talent, culture and financial resources to respond to opportunities that we are unaware of today, but can expect to arise in the future, is critical for sustained success. As a result, much of our planning, focus and subsequent implementation over the last several months has included questioning assumptions and ensuring Anchor remains positioned – working towards the right margin - for the opportunities that surely will arise in the months and years ahead. This has included a revised org chart, expanded partner relationships, new positions and exploration of additional service offerings.

As you will see in the projects and engagements included in this edition of our newsletter, we continue to operate with an ownership mentality as we seek to make space for the unexpected. Despite the on-going uncertainty in capital markets, we continue to be an industry leader and consistently execute on our development projects, close on investment transactions, and maximize patient, provider and investor value in our facilities.
